How To Eliminate Morning Breath
Morning breath works like this... You've had a great night's sleep. The birds are singing as the early sun begins to paint the room in splashes of gold. You roll over to say "good morning" and your partner's head bursts into flames. Okay, I'll admit it... That was just a little bit "over the top." But the point I'm trying to make is that when this problem starts to get in the way of your relationships or the way you perceive those relationships, it can be excruciatingly painful. You shouldn't feel ashamed or alone. Why? Well, this might come as a surprise to you, but most people at one time or another, to one degree or another, are afflicted by morning breath. According to
Dr. Harold Katz,
founder of the California Breath Clinics, approximately 95% of the population suffer from it. For a full 30%, that's the only time of day they experience this problem. The other 65% experience situational or chronic bad breath, so morning breath isn't so unexpected for them. So, what causes morning breath? Before I answer that, let's take a look at what happens while you're awake. While you're awake, your saliva flows freely. This does two things to help alleviate odors. It washes food particles out of your mouth, preventing the particles from decomposing and contributing to breath odor. It also delivers Oxygen to your tongue, gums and throat. These places are the breeding grounds for the anaerobic bacteria which cause bad breath. During normal waking hours, you're also drinking fluids which helps the saliva remove food particles. While you sleep, your saliva flow decreases dramatically. It may even stop. Your mouth gets dry and your saliva thickens. Without the moisture saliva normally provides, your breathing can dry your mouth further. If you typically breathe through your mouth at night, especially if you have a problem with snoring, you're particularly susceptible to morning breath. For those of you who use a CPAP machine for Sleep Apnea, the problem can be even worse. Another event that occurs while you sleep is that the relaxation of your jaw and neck muscles allows your tongue to fall back in your mouth. When this happens the back of your tongue, an area rich in anaerobic bacteria, comes into contact with the back of your throat, promoting the spread of the bacteria. The combination of a dry mouth and spreading bacteria creates a perfect environment for morning breath. That's the short version of what causes it, but I suppose what you'd really like to read about is its prevention and cure. Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that there is no cure. The good news, however, is that there are methods for treating and preventing morning breath that are so effective, you'll feel like you've been cured. The first step is to follow a good oral hygiene program daily. Brush at least twice a day, after every meal if possible, using
a good oxygenating toothpaste
that's SLS-free. Scrape your tongue and then apply a thin coat of the same toothpaste to your tongue. Leave it on for up to 90 seconds. Remember to floss daily, and use an alcohol-free, oxygenating oral rinse.
The second step is just before you go to bed, blow your nose if necessary and use 3-5 drops of
oxygenating sinus drops
in each nostril. This will deliver oxygen to places an oral rinse can't reach.
The third step is to use
AktivOxigen Tablets
to create a special oral rinse. Dissolved in water, these tablets create a powerful, oxygen-rich rinse that can be swallowed. After thoroughly rinsing your mouth swallow the rinse slowly, allowing it to work on the bacteria in your throat. [NOTE: For safety reasons, I do not recommend doing this with just any commercial oral rinse or mouthwash.]
The final step is to repeat step three above first thing in the morning if necessary. At first you may have to, but as you get the anaerobic bacteria under control, you may discover that you no longer need to do this first thing in the morning.
Some of the steps are not possible with commercial products currently available in stores. There is one line of products which I know from my own experience will work for you. I highly recommend that you use
TheraBreath
products to eliminate morning breath.
