Here's the first of our bad breath stories:

I have tonsil stones. I have had them for a couple years now and I cannot get rid of them. Gargling Hydrogen Peroxide helps loosen them. They do eventually come out accidentally by a cough or sneeze, but other than that, they are there. I'm afraid one might come out at an inconvenient time. HELP!!!

-Tonsil Stoner

Hello Tonsil Stoner,

That's a terrible situation you're in. I can certainly understand your concerns about a tonsil stone popping out at an inopportune moment.

The only way to eliminate the problem completely is to have your tonsils removed. You may want to speak to your family physician or an ENT doctor about going this route. Like any other surgery, it has its risks, which have to be taken into consideration. Make usre you ask plenty of questions.

If surgery is not an option at this time, don't lose hope. There are other ways to ease your distress. Some people have had success using a q-tip to pop out tonsil stones. You may want to try this technique after gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide to loosen the stones.

Another method used to remove stones requires a little more work on your part. Get yourself an oral irrigation device such as a Water Pik or HydroPulse. Using a small grinder, such as a Dremel Moto-Tool, widen the opening on the tongue cleaner attachment. Use this attachment with the device on its lowest setting. Be careful here! The trick is to keep the flow strong enough to pop out the tonsil stone but gentle enough that it does not tear the tonsil tissue.

The easiest way to treat tonsil stones is to prevent them from forming. A product line that will help you accomplish this is TheraBreath. Keep in mind that as good as the TheraBreath products are, they will not help you get rid of tonsil stones overnight. It will take time, but these products will eventually eliminate the bacteria which help the tonsil stones form.

Good luck!!
